Dr. Kim Ritchie is a Collaborative Researcher from the Department of Natural Sciences at University of South Carolina at Beaufort. By joining Ocearch in their latest expedition, she was able to study the beneficial microbes found on sharks, that can be used for human therapies.
“When I get on the lift I start sampling teeth, gums, eyes, gills, dorsal and ventral surfaces, and then I just start plating them out onto a little petri dish.”
“Colonies of bacteria [sampled from sharks] grow up and I can start sub-culturing them, purifying them and screening them for antibiotic production. If they are producing antibiotics, do they produce them in a way that could be useful for human therapies?“
